ALCOHOLISM AND ACADEMIC INTEGRITY AMONG ADULT LEARNERS IN ODUKPANI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA CROSS RIVER STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract
his study examined the influence of alcoholism on academic integrity among adult learners in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State. The study adopted survey research design and the sample comprised of one hundred adult learners (50 males and 50 females) randomly selected from two literacy and one extra-mural centres in the study area. The research instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire titled; Influence of Alcoholism on Academic Integrity Among Adult Learners Scale (IAAIAALS). The instrument was validated by experts in Measurement and Evaluation, Faculty of Education, University of Calabar, Calabar. The reliability of the instrument was ensured using Cronbach Alpha and result showed the coefficient of the sub scale ranged from 0.72 – 0.83 which showed that the instrument is reliable. Data collection was done personally by the researchers and the data collected were analyzed using independent t-test. Each hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance. The results revealed that high alcohol intake affects academic integrity among adult learners. High alcoholism is associated with adult learner’s social life. Based on the findings, it was recommended, among others, that there should be awareness creation among public and policy-makers on the implications of alcohol consumption in educational settings.

Alcohol is one of the most commonly used drugs in Nigeria. Adults take alcohol to relax, celebrate, have fun, gain confidence and forget problems.
